Episode 370
E 370: Tammy's Takes #45: What If They Misunderstand You?
Have you ever set a boundary... and then immediately felt the need to explain it?
And then explain your explanation?
Maybe you soften what you said, send another text, replay the conversation for hours, or start wondering whether you did something wrong.
For many adult children of dysfunctional families, being misunderstood doesn’t just feel uncomfortable. It can feel unsafe.
In this week’s Tammy’s Takes, I build on one powerful idea from my conversation with Nima Rahmany:
“Learn how to expand your capacity to be misunderstood.”
That stopped me.
Because so many of us grew up learning to monitor everyone else’s moods, reactions, and opinions. We became experts at reading the room, keeping the peace, people pleasing, explaining ourselves, and making sure everyone else was okay.
Eventually, another person’s perception of us can become connected to our own sense of safety.
So when someone is disappointed in us, disagrees with us, or thinks we're selfish, our immediate response can be:
“I need to fix this.”
But do you?
In this episode, we explore the difference between healthy communication and overexplaining from fear.
I talk about why someone being disappointed in your boundary doesn’t automatically mean your boundary is wrong, why repairing a relationship is very different from abandoning yourself to save it, and how self-trust begins to grow when you stop needing everyone else to agree with your choices.
I’ll also give you one question to start asking yourself when you notice that urge to explain:
“Am I explaining because this information is actually necessary... or because I’m afraid of what they’ll think about me if I don’t?”
Healing isn't about becoming someone who doesn't care what anyone thinks.
It's about becoming grounded enough in who you are that someone else's opinion doesn't determine how you feel about yourself.
Because maybe freedom isn't getting everyone to understand you.
Maybe freedom is understanding yourself enough that you no longer need everyone else to.

good morning, everybody.
2
:Welcome back to another
episode of Tammy's Takes.
3
:So if you listened to my conversation
yesterday with Nima Rahmany, there were
4
:so many things that we could unpack
from that episode, tons of things.
5
:But there was one sentence he made
that stopped me in my tracks, and he
6
:said, when I asked him at the end,
"What tip or trick or words of wisdom
7
:could you give the rest of the world?"
8
:He said, "You need to learn how to expand
your capacity to be misunderstood."
9
:And I thought, "Damn."
10
:Because if you're an adult child of
dysfunction, being misunderstood can
11
:feel almost unbearable, and I don't
think we really talk about that enough.
12
:So think about how much energy you might
have spent throughout your life trying
13
:to make sure people understood you.
14
:You explain things, and then you
over-explain them, and then you
15
:explain your explanation, and
then you give them more context.
16
:Then you soften what you said
because maybe it sounded too harsh.
17
:Then you send another text because
you're worried they took the first text
18
:wrong, and then you replay the entire
conversation for three days in your mind.
19
:And these are the things you're asking
yourself, Did I hurt their feelings?
20
:Do you think I'm selfish?
21
:Do they think I'm angry?
22
:Do they think I'm a bad person?
23
:Should I text them again?
24
:And then we call that communication But
sometimes, that's not communication.
25
:That's flat out fear.
26
:The fear of allowing someone else to
have a version of you in their head that
27
:you cannot control, that's what it is.
28
:And for an adult child, that
can feel incredibly unsafe.
29
:Because think about what many
of us have learned growing up.
30
:You learn to read a room, you learn
to pay attention to everybody else's
31
:emotions, you learn that someone's
mood could affect what happened next.
32
:So you kept questioning things
like, "Are they mad at me?
33
:Did I do something wrong?
34
:Are we okay?
35
:Do they still love me, and am I safe?"
36
:And the list goes on and on and on.
37
:And eventually, people's perception
of you can become connected
38
:to your own sense of safety.
39
:So now what happens?
40
:Now you're 30, 40, 50, 60, even 70
years old and someone misunderstands
41
:you, and your body literally reacts
like something is terribly wrong.
42
:That's the part I want you to notice.
43
:Because sometimes the problem
is not they misunderstand me.
44
:Sometimes the problem is I don't feel
okay unless they understand me, and those
45
:are two completely different things.
46
:And this is where self-trust comes in, and
this is what I work with a lot of people.
47
:Because self-trust says, "I know what
I meant, I know what my intention
48
:was, I know what I need, I know what
my boundary is, I know who I am."
49
:And someone else is allowed to have
a different opinion about that.
50
:It doesn't mean we don't care
about other people's feelings.
51
:It doesn't mean we become insensitive.
52
:it doesn't mean we're just
saying, "Screw everybody else.
53
:I'll say whatever I want
and not worry about it."
54
:That's not healing either.
55
:If I hurt someone, I do wanna know.
56
:If I've behaved badly, I
wanna take responsibility.
57
:And if there's something I need
to repair, I wanna repair it.
58
:Nima actually talked a lot about
repair in our conversation, and he
59
:talked about how healthy relationships
aren't relationships without conflict.
60
:What matters is whether we can come
back, listen to the other person's
61
:experience, and repair after the rupture.
62
:Here's the difference.
63
:Repair is not the same thing as abandoning
yourself so somebody won't be upset
64
:with you, and adult children confuse
those two things all of the time.
65
:Let's say someone asks you
to do something this weekend.
66
:You say, "I'm sorry,
I can't this weekend."
67
:And they respond, "Wow,
you've really changed."
68
:Ouch.
69
:There's the trigger
70
:Now, because your nervous system,
what it really wants to do is say,
71
:"No, no, no, I haven't changed.
72
:It's not that I don't wanna see you.
73
:It's just that I've had a really
long week, and this was on Sunday and
74
:Saturday, and I promised myself I was
going to blah, blah, blah, blah, blah."
75
:You're abandoning yourself.
76
:Look what just happened.
77
:You went from setting a boundary,
which was healthy, a healthy boundary,
78
:to building a legal defense for
why you're allowed to have one.
79
:Why?
80
:Because they misunderstood you.
81
:Or maybe they understood you perfectly
and just didn't like your answer.
82
:That's another big one.
83
:Someone being disappointed in your
boundary does not automatically
84
:mean your boundary was wrong.
85
:Someone thinking you're selfish
doesn't automatically make you selfish.
86
:Someone disagreeing with your decision
doesn't automatically mean you've made
87
:the wrong decision, and someone being
angry with you does not automatically
88
:mean that you did something wrong.
89
:That is very hard concept to
wrap your head around if you are
90
:an adult child and growing up,
you always did everything wrong.
91
:Somewhere along the way, we have learned
if you're okay with me, then I'm okay.
92
:So healing becomes
something very different.
93
:Healing needs to say, "I can be okay even
when you're not okay with me," and that's
94
:huge, and it doesn't happen overnight.
95
:You're building capacity.
96
:That's why I love Nima's wording where
he said you have to build the capacity
97
:for people to misunderstand you.
98
:He didn't say stop caring
what anybody thinks.
99
:He said to expand your
capacity to be misunderstood.
100
:And maybe that means that today you
tolerate 30 seconds of discomfort
101
:without explaining yourself.
102
:Maybe next week you set a boundary and
don't add six paragraphs explaining why.
103
:Maybe someone disagrees with you
and instead of immediately defending
104
:yourself, you say, "Huh, interesting.
105
:We're gonna have to agree to
disagree on that one," period.
106
:Oh my God, do you know how
hard that can be though?
107
:No defense, no PowerPoint presentation,
no 14 screenshots proving your side, just
108
:I understand that you see it differently.
109
:And then notice what happens
inside of your body, because
110
:that is where the work begins.
111
:That is where it starts, my friends.
112
:Your chest might tighten, your stomach
might turn, you might feel the urge to
113
:grab your phone and send one more message.
114
:You might feel guilty.
115
:You might feel selfish.
116
:You might feel scared.
117
:And instead of immediately doing something
to make that feeling disappear, see
118
:if you can stay with it for a moment.
119
:Put your hand on your chest, slow
down your breathing, and just
120
:ask yourself or tell yourself, "I
can tolerate being misunderstood.
121
:I don't have to fix
their perception of me.
122
:I'm allowed to know exactly who I am
when someone else sees me differently."
123
:Can you do that?
124
:can you say those things to
yourself and be okay with that?
125
:Because here's the question I really
want you to take with this week.
126
:How much of your life are you
spending trying to control
127
:other people's version of you?
128
:Their version of you, not yours.
129
:Because every time you change yourself
so somebody else won't misunderstand
130
:you, every time you don't say what
you really think, every time you
131
:say yes when you wanna say no, every
time you shrink a boundary because
132
:someone doesn't like it, you may be
protecting the relationship with them,
133
:but I want you to ask yourself this.
134
:What is it costing with your
relationship with yourself?
135
:Nima said something else
in our conversation that
136
:connects perfectly with this.
137
:He said, "The ultimate freedom is when
your sense of okayness is no longer
138
:conditional on another person changing."
139
:I would add something to that.
140
:Your okayness doesn't have to depend on
somebody else understanding you either.
141
:That is self-trust.
142
:That's authenticity.
143
:That's freedom.
144
:So here's your little Tammy's
Takes challenge for this week.
145
:Catch yourself the next time
you start over-explaining.
146
:Just notice it, and ask yourself, "Am
I explaining because this information
147
:is actually necessary, or am I
explaining because I'm afraid of what
148
:they'll think about me if I don't?"
149
:And if it's the second one, see if you
can say a little less, let the discomfort
150
:be there, let them have their opinion,
and keep reminding yourself, "I do not
151
:have to abandon myself just to make
sure someone else understands me."
152
:Because maybe healing isn't
getting everybody in your life
153
:to finally understand you.
154
:Maybe healing is getting to the place
where you understand yourself enough
155
:that you don't need everybody else to.
156
:So guys, that's my
Tammy's Takes for today.
157
:Love you guys.
158
:I will see you next time.
159
:If you wanna reach out and ask me any
questions about this, I always offer a
160
:complimentary calm and clarity call where
we can get online, we can talk about
161
:whatever's going through, what patterns
you have, what questions you have, and
162
:we can meet you right where you're at.
163
:So go ahead, book that call,
and I will see you soon.
164
:Take care.
165
:Bye-bye.
