Episode 358
E 356: Tammys' Takes #39 Your Triggers Aren't the Problem—They're the Clues
Have you ever wondered why something seemingly small can create such a big emotional reaction?
In this Tammy's Take, Tammy builds on her conversation with author David Deane Haskell and explains why our strongest emotional reactions often have very little to do with what's happening today—and everything to do with what happened years ago.
You'll learn why your nervous system isn't overreacting... it's remembering.
Tammy introduces the powerful concept of becoming the detective instead of the judge, showing you how to stop asking, "What's wrong with me?" and start asking the questions that actually lead to healing.
In this episode you'll discover:
- Why today's triggers are often connected to yesterday's wounds
- The difference between an event and the meaning you attach to it
- How childhood experiences shape adult emotional reactions
- Why your nervous system reacts before your logical brain
- Three simple questions to ask when you're emotionally triggered
- How curiosity can replace shame and self-judgment
- Why your triggers may actually be pointing you toward your next breakthrough
If you've ever felt like you're "too sensitive" or wondered why your reactions feel bigger than the situation, this episode will help you see yourself through a completely different lens.

Welcome back to another episode of
Tammy's Takes, where we take powerful
2
:conversations with our guests and
turn them into practical strategies
3
:you can use right here, right now.
4
:So if you haven't listened to my
episode with David Dean Haskell,
5
:author of Wounded Angels and Inner
Child Unleashed, I encourage you to
6
:go back and listen after this episode.
7
:David shared something,
that I absolutely loved.
8
:reaction feels much bigger than
the situation in front of us,
9
:it usually is because something
much older has been touched.
10
:And I thought, "Oh my God, yes,
exactly," because that's one of
11
:the biggest misunderstandings
people have about healing.
12
:People come to me all the time
with, say things like, "Tammy,
13
:I don't know why I get so upset.
14
:I don't know why I couldn't stop crying.
15
:I don't know why I shut down.
16
:I don't know why I get so angry."
17
:They assume something is wrong with them.
18
:But what if nothing's wrong with you?
19
:What if it's just your nervous system
simply trying to finish a conversation
20
:that started many, many years ago?
21
:Here's what I teach my clients.
22
:There are events, and then there
are meanings to those events.
23
:The event today might be tiny.
24
:Someone forgets to text you back.
25
:The spouse sounds irritated.
26
:Your boss gives you constructive feedback.
27
:A friend doesn't invite you somewhere.
28
:Those are today's events that
happen every single day, but your
29
:nervous system doesn't always
seem to react from today's event.
30
:It reacts to yesterday's meaning, meaning
if you spent your childhood feeling
31
:totally ignored, being out, being left
out today doesn't just feel disappointing.
32
:It feels completely familiar.
33
:So if you were constantly criticized
growing up, your mom was always telling
34
:you you were doing something wrong, when
you get constructive feedback from your
35
:boss, it doesn't just feel uncomfortable.
36
:It feels dangerous.
37
:If love was unpredictable, and you always
had to earn your peace and earn your
38
:love, silence doesn't feel peaceful.
39
:It feels like abandonment.
40
:That's why your reaction seems
so much bigger than the moment.
41
:Guys, you've heard me say it so
many times, time and time again.
42
:When you were little,
everything feels big.
43
:So if you are living from the past when
you were little, it's going to feel big.
44
:One of my favorite things that David
talked about was how triggers often
45
:point us back toward your younger
selves, and I completely agree with that.
46
:But here's what I wanna take
just a little bit further.
47
:I don't want you to fear
your triggers anymore.
48
:I want you to become curious about them.
49
:Stop looking at them with judgment
because every single trigger you have,
50
:it's nothing more than information.
51
:It literally contains all the
information you need to heal.
52
:So instead of asking yourself this dreaded
question of, "What's wrong with me?"
53
:Those four words that I think
ought to be taken out of the
54
:English vocabulary completely.
55
:Start asking yourself, "What is
this reaction trying to protect?"
56
:It's a completely different question, and
when you start asking it, it's going to
57
:change you, the way you look at yourself.
58
:If I had to give this a name, and you
know I love giving things a name, I
59
:would actually just call this becoming
the detective instead of the judge.
60
:Most of us judge ourselves immediately.
61
:What do you say to yourself?
62
:You go, "Oh my gosh, I
shouldn't feel this way.
63
:I'm overreacting.
64
:I'm too sensitive.
65
:No wonder nobody likes me."
66
:Sound familiar?
67
:Yeah, we've all said
those things to ourselves.
68
:But instead, I want you to
put your detective hat on.
69
:Ask yourself, "What happened?
70
:What did I make that mean?
71
:And more importantly, when
have I felt this before?"
72
:Notice I didn't ask, when did
this start, because sometimes you
73
:don't even know when that started.
74
:Sometimes your body remembers
long before your mind does.
75
:So here's something I
want you to try this week.
76
:Simple exercise.
77
:The next time you notice a big emotional
reaction, just pause, take a slow breath,
78
:and ask yourself these three questions.
79
:Number one: What just happened?
80
:Number two: What is the story
I immediately tell myself?
81
:And number three, and this may
seem really strange to you, but
82
:how old do I feel right now?
83
:The last question surprises almost
everyone, because you'll often
84
:realize, "I don't feel 57 years old.
85
:I feel 8, or I feel 12.
86
:I feel 5.
87
:I feel like that scared little kid
who believed they weren't enough."
88
:And that is incredibly invaluable
information Because honestly, once
89
:you realize that your eight-year-old
self is driving the bus, you can
90
:lovingly invite your adult self
back into the driver's seat.
91
:Healing doesn't happen
because you get triggered.
92
:Healing happens because you stop believing
every trigger is telling you the truth.
93
:The trigger is not your enemy.
94
:It's a messenger, and if you stop
fighting it long enough to listen,
95
:it may show you exactly where your
next layer of healing is waiting.
96
:David also shared something
that I hope sticks with you.
97
:He reminded us, "Don't
give up on yourself."
98
:I couldn't agree more.
99
:Healing isn't about pretending
your childhood never happened.
100
:It's about refusing to let it
write the rest of your story.
101
:I talk all the time about how when
I was a child, I used to feel like
102
:somebody else was writing my story,
and I wasn't holding the pen.
103
:But now I am a grown-ass adult,
and I get to hold the pen to this.
104
:I get to write the rest of my
story, and so do you, my friends.
105
:You get to write the rest of your story.
106
:So if this episode resonated with
you at all and you're kinda tired
107
:of reacting in ways that you don't
understand, I would love to help you.
108
:During my complimentary clarity
and calm call, we'll be identifying
109
:the survival patterns your nervous
system learned years ago and, more
110
:importantly, how to start changing them.
111
:Or if you're just curious about maybe
what chronic stress did to you and how
112
:you might be communicating through these
patterns through your body, I also offer
113
:a complimentary AO Biofrequency scan demo.
114
:We can explore your body's stress patterns
and talk about practical next steps.
115
:You'll find both links in the show notes.
116
:But before you go, I want you
to remember this: your trigger
117
:is not proof that you're broken.
118
:It's proof that a younger part of
you is still waiting to be heard.
119
:So until that time, take care of yourself,
be gentle with yourself, and remember,
120
:healing begins the moment curiosity
becomes stronger than self-judgment.
121
:I'll see you next time.
122
:Take care, and I love you guys.
123
:Have a good day.
