Episode 354

E 354: Tammy's Takes #37: Why Trauma Hijacks Your Attention (And How to Reclaim It)

Have you ever wondered why your mind won't slow down?

Why you replay conversations...

Doom scroll...

Jump from one task to another...

Or constantly worry about what might happen next?

What if your attention isn't broken at all?

In this week's Tammy's Takes, Tammy Vincent builds on her conversation with Kira Shishkin, CEO of Informed Now, to explore a deeper question:

What is your attention trying to protect you from?

While Kira introduces the idea of an Attention Audit, Tammy expands on the concept by showing how our attention often follows old survival patterns created in childhood.

If you grew up in a dysfunctional home, your nervous system may have learned to constantly scan for danger, criticism, rejection, or conflict. Those patterns don't simply disappear when we become adults—they often continue directing our attention without us even realizing it.

In this episode, you'll discover:

• Why attention is actually information from your nervous system

• How childhood trauma shapes where your focus naturally goes

• The connection between hypervigilance and distraction

• Why overthinking is often a survival strategy—not a personal weakness

• How to recognize the hidden patterns behind your attention

• Tammy's original Attention Breadcrumb Exercise to uncover where those patterns began

• Practical steps to begin rebuilding self-trust and retraining your nervous system

If you've ever felt frustrated with your inability to focus, stay present, or quiet your mind, this episode will help you look beyond the symptom and begin understanding the story your attention has been trying to tell.

Speaker:

hello, everybody.

2

:

Welcome back to another episode

of Tammy's Takes, where we take

3

:

powerful conversations and turn

them into practical strategies

4

:

you can use right here, right now.

5

:

So if you haven't had a chance to listen

to yesterday's episode, I encourage you

6

:

to go back and check it out, because

I had the privilege of speaking with

7

:

Kira Shishkin, the CEO of Informed Now,

a unique news platform that's changing

8

:

the way people consume information.

9

:

Kira is a four-time entrepreneur,

a Forbes 30 Under 30 recipient, and

10

:

someone whose life was forever changed

after surviving a devastating car

11

:

accident as a child that left him in

a coma with a traumatic brain injury.

12

:

During our conversation, he shared

his incredible story of resilience and

13

:

recovery, but what really caught my

attention was something that he said.

14

:

He said that attention is one

of our greatest superpowers.

15

:

I couldn't stop thinking about that.

16

:

Because while I absolutely agree

with him, I also believe attention

17

:

is something else for many people.

18

:

I think attention is information.

19

:

In fact, I believe your attention

is one of the greatest clues your

20

:

nervous system gives you about

what's happening beneath the surface.

21

:

So many people come to me saying things

like, "Oh my God, Tammy, I can't focus.

22

:

My mind never shuts off.

23

:

I'm constantly distracted.

24

:

I overthink everything.

25

:

I can't stay present."

26

:

And the list goes on.

27

:

And I don't believe that attention

is actually the real problem.

28

:

I think it's pointing us to something

much, much deeper than that.

29

:

if you grew up in a dysfunctional

family like many of us did, your

30

:

attention wasn't designed for peace.

31

:

It was designed for survival.

32

:

Your attention learned to scan a

room before you walked into it.

33

:

It learned to notice change in someone's

voice, the way the cupboard slam,

34

:

the sighs, the silence, the tension.

35

:

Honestly, many of us became very good at

reading everyone else because somewhere

36

:

along the way, your nervous system

learned a message that if I can predict

37

:

what's coming, maybe I can stay safe.

38

:

And that's not a character

flaw, it's survival.

39

:

But the problem is that many

of us are still using that same

40

:

survival strategy decades later.

41

:

So today, your attention might bounce

from an email to social media, to

42

:

worrying about your finances, to

replaying a conversation, to wondering

43

:

if someone is upset with you.

44

:

And then what do you tell yourself?

45

:

You, of course, immediately

beat yourself up and you

46

:

question, "What's wrong with me?

47

:

Why can't I just focus?"

48

:

Let's rethink this for a minute.

49

:

Maybe nothing's wrong with you.

50

:

Maybe your nervous system is simply doing

exactly what it learned to do years ago.

51

:

One of the thing I loved about

Kira's interview was the exercise he

52

:

shared called the attention audit.

53

:

He encourages people to simply

notice where their attention

54

:

goes throughout the day.

55

:

I love that exercise because

awareness is always the first step.

56

:

You can't change what you

don't notice, obviously.

57

:

But I'd like to build on Kira's

idea and take it one step deeper.

58

:

I call it the attention breadcrumb

exercise, and I know you're

59

:

thinking, "Oh my gosh, Tammy,

here we go, another exercise."

60

:

But I like you to be

able to practice things.

61

:

I like you to be able to put them

into a tangible exercise that you

62

:

can do to see if you can shift

just a tiny bit what's been going

63

:

on and the patterns that you have.

64

:

So I don't just want you to notice

where your attention goes for this.

65

:

I want you to discover where it first

learned to go, and here's how it works.

66

:

The next time you catch yourself

worrying, overthinking, replaying the

67

:

conversation, or getting distracted,

or spiraling into worst-case

68

:

scenarios, I want you to just pause.

69

:

You know there is so

much power in the pause.

70

:

Don't criticize yourself.

71

:

Don't try to fix it.

72

:

Just ask yourself, "Where

did my attention just go?"

73

:

Maybe it went to fear.

74

:

Maybe it went to money.

75

:

Maybe it went to thinking

about your health.

76

:

Maybe it went to thinking

about your children.

77

:

Maybe it went to someone

else's opinion of you.

78

:

Who cares?

79

:

Just name it.

80

:

Now ask yourself a second most important

question: When have I felt this before?

81

:

Not yesterday, not last week,

but just go all the way back.

82

:

This is to remind you of trying to

keep the peace in your home, trying

83

:

not to make a mistake, trying to avoid

criticism, trying to earn someone's love.

84

:

We're talking about walking

on eggshells here, and that is

85

:

where your attention always went.

86

:

Did you feel like you

always had to be perfect?

87

:

Because here's what I've learned.

88

:

Our attention rarely lives in the present.

89

:

It follows old trails or,

in my case, breadcrumbs.

90

:

It follows old emotional memories.

91

:

It follows survival patterns our

nervous system created years,

92

:

sometimes honestly even decades ago.

93

:

Now, here's the most important part.

94

:

Close your eyes for just a moment.

95

:

Picture that younger version of yourself.

96

:

Maybe they were six, eight,

10, 15, whatever it was.

97

:

Just notice them.

98

:

Now ask that younger version of

yourself one simple question: "What

99

:

were you trying to protect me from?"

100

:

Then listen.

101

:

Just listen.

102

:

Don't force an answer.

103

:

Just be curious.

104

:

You might be surprised by what comes

up, because that younger version of you

105

:

wasn't trying to sabotage your life.

106

:

They were trying to help you survive it.

107

:

Now I want you to take a slow breath,

deep breath, put your hand over

108

:

your heart, look around the room,

notice five things you can see, feel

109

:

your feet on the floor, and quietly

remind yourself, "That was then.

110

:

This is now.

111

:

I don't have to keep looking for danger.

112

:

Today, I get to choose

where my attention goes."

113

:

healing isn't just about

changing your thoughts.

114

:

It's about teaching your nervous

system that life is different

115

:

now, that you don't have to scan

every single room you walk into.

116

:

You don't have to anticipate

everybody's emotions.

117

:

You don't have to prepare for

every single possible disaster

118

:

that could possibly come your way.

119

:

You can finally begin paying attention

to yourself, to your needs, to your joy,

120

:

to your happiness, to your own peace.

121

:

Because after working with hundreds

of people who grew up in dysfunctional

122

:

homes, I've noticed something: Where

your attention lives, your life follows.

123

:

So if your attention is always

looking for danger, your nervous

124

:

system never gets to rest.

125

:

If your attention is always focused

on what everyone else thinks, you

126

:

slowly lose sight of yourself.

127

:

And if your attention is always on

what's missing, you'll miss what's

128

:

already beautiful about your world.

129

:

So I wanna encourage you, begin

intentionally bringing your attention

130

:

back to the present, back to your

body, back to your values, back to

131

:

your own voice, back to what you

should be cherishing all along.

132

:

And sometimes when you do this,

incredible things begin to happen.

133

:

You begin rebuilding something that trauma

often takes away, and that is self-trust.

134

:

You've heard me say it so many times.

135

:

Because every time you choose where

your intention goes, instead of

136

:

allowing your survival patterns to

choose for you, you're telling your

137

:

nervous system, "We're safe now.

138

:

I've got us."

139

:

And that is where the

healing begins, my friends.

140

:

So this week, I'd encourage

you to try both exercises.

141

:

Start with Kira's attention audit,

and simply notice where your attention

142

:

usually goes throughout the day.

143

:

Then use the attention breadcrumb

exercise, and ask yourself,

144

:

"Where did my attention go?

145

:

When have I felt this before?

146

:

And what was my younger self at that

time trying to protect me from?"

147

:

Those are three questions that honestly

alone can uncover patterns that have

148

:

been running your life for years.

149

:

And if you're listening today and

you're thinking, "Oh, I know my

150

:

attention is trying to tell me

something, I just don't know what it

151

:

is," I'd love to help you discover it.

152

:

I offer a complimentary clarity and

calm call, where we'll explore the

153

:

hidden patterns behind your attention,

your triggers, your nervous system,

154

:

and the beliefs that may have been

shaping your life-- since childhood.

155

:

Sometimes we simply can't see our

patterns ourselves because we've been

156

:

living inside of them for so long.

157

:

So together, we can look at them.

158

:

We'll begin connecting the dots so you

can move forward from survival into

159

:

genuine self-trust and lasting healing.

160

:

You can book your complimentary call

using the link in today's show notes.

161

:

. Until next time, remember, your attention

isn't your enemy, it's a messenger.

162

:

And when you begin listening to it with

curiosity instead of criticism, it might

163

:

just lead you to the very place your

healing has been waiting all along.

164

:

So until next time, my

friends, I love you guys.

165

:

I will see you back, and I hope that

helped just even the tiniest little bit.

166

:

Because tiny steps of healing

is how it all happens.

167

:

Have a blessed day
