Episode 112

E112: Living With The "As If" Personality Diagnosis: Guest: Stacy Blemaster

In this episode, we sit down with Stacy Blemaster, a licensed professional counselor, who shares her deeply personal story of mental health struggles and recovery. Stacy opens up about her crash into depression during her first year at Brown University, where she was eventually diagnosed with As-if Personality Disorder—a condition in which one lives a life of pretense, without a feeling of true authenticity. She connects this aspect of her disorder to her upbringing in a wealthy family that prioritized maintaining a perfect public image while hiding many dark secrets.

Stacy grew up in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio, surrounded by expectations to uphold this flawless exterior. Her journey from feeling disconnected and lost to embracing her true self is both inspiring and eye-opening.

In this episode, we explore:

  1. The impact of growing up in an image-driven family – How the pressure to appear perfect and the secrets hidden by her extended family influenced her mental health.
  2. As-if Personality Bipolar Disorder – Understanding this lesser-known disorder, and how it affected Stacy’s ability to connect with her authentic self.
  3. Breaking free from the cycle of pretense – How Stacy found her way toward authenticity and healing through counseling, self-reflection, and personal growth.

Stacy, who holds a BA in Theater Arts from Brown University and an MA in Counseling and Human Services from John Carroll University, now lives in Placida, Florida, with her second husband and two golden retrievers. She also has three grown children from a previous marriage. With a wealth of personal and professional experience, Stacy’s story offers hope for anyone struggling with issues of self-identity, mental health, and authenticity.

Join us as we delve into her journey from perfection to authenticity, and learn how she turned her life around.
